Your Health in Mind: Exercise for everybody

By Dee Griffin

Exercise is a weight loss powerhouse but that does not mean everyone should run in a marathon. Cardio helps burn calories and weightlifting will build muscle which will boost your metabolism. The key is to find something that you enjoy.

For beginners, it may be a simple walk for 20 minutes three times per week or an easy yoga routine from a video online. If you have knee or joint issues, you may need to start in a pool to take some of the pressure off of your joints. The key in the beginning should be more on the consistency and building the habit than on lifting you max weight at the gym.

Once you have the habit going and start to look forward to working out (yes that can actually happen) then you can adjust exercises, intensity, and time as needed.

Exercise does more than help you burn calories. It improves cardiovascular health, increases muscle strength and bone density (strength training), improves flexibility, mobility, and balance. It also boosts your immune system.

Exercise takes a toll on your mental and emotional health as well. It reduces stress and anxiety, improves overall mood and mental health, improves your cognitive function, and provides better sleep quality.

Exercise also provides for increased energy, improved confidence and self-esteem and helps you live longer.
