Mayor Barry A. Walker, Sr., and Councilman Bill Danielson helped to plant an olive tree in the Irmo Town Park as part of the annual Arbor Day Foundation Tree City USA planting ceremony.
Public Works Director Whit Cline had the town designated as a member of Tree City USA back in 2009. In order to qualify the town must have an arborist, a tree inventory, public planting of trees, and a proclamation. The organization started in 1976 when it only had forty communities. Now it has 3600 communities in all 50 states. Arbor Day is celebrated on the first Friday in December in the state of South Carolina.
