Candidate’s Residency

To the Editor,

I write in response to a recent letter that appeared to dismiss concerns raised about a
candidate’s residency in Irmo. It’s troubling that valid questions are met with accusations of
racism and hostility. If voters aren’t allowed to ask questions to determine who should get their
vote, then democracy and our political freedoms have failed. All candidates should indeed meet
residency requirements, and although it’s unfortunate that the candidates don’t accurately
represent the demographic makeup of Irmo, it does not open the door for anyone to run simply
because they represent a certain group.

The integrity of elected officials is paramount,
regardless of any other factor. It’s astounding that race is more important than integrity. I
thought we weren’t to judge a person because of skin color but on content of character. Isn’t this
premise undoing the work of black leaders?

Sincerely,
Marie Ryan
