Ethan Offing was a state championship quarterback at Dutch Fork and pitched in a World Series with Irmo Little League.
As he looks toward starting a college career at Clemson, he now has an option with Major League Baseball. On Sunday, Offing was selected as an outfielder with the 544th overall pick in the 18th round of the draft.
The website Talksox.com described Offing as having “a lot of athletic upside to go along with speed that allows him to fly on the base paths.
As an outfielder, Offing was also described as having “shown quick jumps to get to the ball and also played shortstop in high school. He’s viewed as a potential plus defender in centerfield.”
He was the second Clemson commit selected in the draft, following pitcher Blake Bryant who was picked 31st by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
MLB teams have until July 27 to sign draft picks.
