The Town of Irmo has announced that Councilman Mike Ward has successfully completed the South Carolina Palmetto Leadership Academy, a statewide initiative hosted by the Conservation Voters of South Carolina Education Fund.
The Palmetto Leadership Academy is designed to equip emerging and established leaders with practical knowledge and leadership tools necessary to effectively serve their communities. The program focuses on areas including government budgeting, Freedom of Information Act compliance, procedural responsibilities, environmental stewardship, land conservation, energy consumption, community health, and water resource management.
Ward emphasized the importance of technical expertise and accountability in public service.
“True conservation is rooted in being a good steward of our resources, both our natural environment and our taxpayers’ dollars,” Ward said. “This opportunity provided me with additional training in topics like government budgeting, FOIA laws, and procedural duties. This helps ensure local leaders aren’t just well-intentioned but are technically proficient and fiscally responsible.”
He added that a strong understanding of the “nuts and bolts” of governance helps ensure local government remains efficient, transparent, and accountable to the people of South Carolina.
Ward also highlighted the broader impact of the academy on developing leadership throughout the state.
“Leadership is about taking ownership of our own backyard,” Ward said. “The PLA program equips any South Carolinian with the tools to lead from the front on local issues, even if you’re not in any kind of position yet.”
He noted that the program combined technical leadership training with discussions led by professionals from a variety of industries on topics including energy use, land conservation, community health, and water conservation — all areas he says will help guide future decisions for the Irmo community.
Town officials commended Ward for his commitment to continued learning and professional development, noting that his participation reflects Irmo’s ongoing dedication to informed and forward-thinking leadership.
