Irmo elects a new councilman

Gabriel Penfield won a seat on the Irmo town council on February 27.

Penfield was opposed by George Frazier. Both men ran unsuccessfully in the November election and
found themselves facing each other again for the special election.

With all precincts reporting, Gabriel Penfield claimed 433 votes to Frazier’s 135 to become the newest
councilman.

Penfield, 43, is a local financial planner and entrepreneur who lost by a narrow margin to Phyllis
Coleman in the November 2023 election that was contested twice by Lexington County Registrations
and Board Members. The outcome of the election from both hearings did not change.

Frazier is an Irmo resident who was disqualified in that same election for failing to notify election
officials of an address change. His name was removed from the ballot in November but he still received
votes.

Irmo held the special election to fill a council seat vacated by Bill Danielson in November upon his
mayor election. As a town councilman, Danielson won his bid for mayor over incumbent Barry Walker
leaving  2 years to fill his four-year term. The winner of this election will run again in two years.
