IRMO – The Town of Irmo has officially renamed Irmo Town Park as Whitt Cline Community Park, honoring longtime Public Services Director Whitt Cline for his 25 years of service to the community.
The change was approved unanimously by Town Council through Resolution No. 26-04 on March 24, with the new park sign installed April 15.
Cline, who served as the town’s Public Services Director and arborist before retiring, played a key role in shaping Irmo’s parks and green spaces. Under his leadership, the town earned its first Tree City USA designation in 2009—an honor it has maintained every year since.
Mayor Bill Danielson said the renaming reflects the lasting impact of Cline’s work.
“It is a great honor and privilege to name our former Irmo Town Park after Whitt Cline,” Danielson said. “His expertise in maintaining the beauty of our parks and public spaces is unmatched, and his dedication to this community will now be remembered here for generations.”
Town Administrator Jim Crosland, who worked alongside Cline for more than two decades, said the results of his efforts can be seen throughout Irmo.
“Every park you visit, and every tree planted along Woodrow Street, is a testament to his work,” Crosland said. “His commitment to beautifying our town set a standard that continues today.”
Former Town Administrator Courtney Dennis described Cline as a visionary who transformed ordinary spaces into standout features of the community.
“He had a unique ability to see potential everywhere,” Dennis said. “Under his leadership, Irmo became a more beautiful place year-round.”
During a dedication ceremony attended by family, friends and colleagues, Cline expressed appreciation for the recognition and reflected on his years of service.
“I consider myself a very lucky man,” he said. “We’ve got a good thing going here in Irmo, and I expect it to keep going.”
The newly named Whitt Cline Community Park, located at 7330 Carlisle Street, now stands as a lasting tribute to Cline’s contributions and commitment to the town.
