The streets of Whitehall subdivision put out more than 10,000 American Flags in honor of all the military that gave the ultimate sacrifice on Memorial Day, May 25.
This started 16 years ago by Lester Blackwell who lives on Tram Road. He paid for 500 flags out of his own pocket and put them out in the middle of the night to keep from having to explain himself to people. Each year it has grown and this year has reached more than 10,000 flags lining the streets.
“I never served in the military,” said Lester. “But I do have 17 years experience in the Boy Scouts helping with the youth.”
Volunteers started putting out the flags last week. They placed the flags about 18” apart right off the curb and lined a large portion of the streets of Whitehall. Lester Blackwell is 83 years old and looks forward to doing this each year.
“It’s my contribution to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice and we will never see again.”
