The Columbia Philatelic Society (CPS) recently celebrated its 90th anniversary, marking nearly a century of fostering interest in stamp collecting and postal history across the Midlands.
Founded in 1935, CPS is one of the oldest continuously operating stamp clubs in South Carolina. The organization currently has more than 50 active members who meet monthly to share collections, exchange knowledge, and give presentations on topics ranging from postal history to world culture.
While some may consider stamp collecting a pastime of the past, members say the hobby remains vibrant and meaningful. Through stamps, collectors explore history, art, geography, and world events — from wildlife and space travel to world leaders and museums.
Each year, the club hosts stamp shows that draw collectors from across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia, providing opportunities to buy, sell, and trade stamps as well as connect with others who share an interest in the hobby.
Visitors are always welcome at meetings. The next CPS gathering will be Sunday, November 26, at 2 p.m. at the Tri-City Leisure Center, 485 Brooks Avenue, West Columbia.
