Two candidates file for Irmo Council election

By Al Dozier

Two candidates have filed for the Irmo Council seat to be filled in a special election February 27.

Gabriel Penfield and George Frazier have officially filed for the seat, left vacant by Bill Danielson, who was elected mayor in November.

Both candidates made unsuccessful efforts to win a council seat in November.

Before that election, Frazier was disqualified as a candidate after he failed to report his change of address within the time allotted.

Penfield, who narrowly lost to Phyllis Coleman, filed a protest over the election results because Frazier’s name was still on the ballot, drawing votes that could have gone to a valid candidate. That protest was dismissed by election officials, who said flyers were handed out at voting locations announcing Frazier’s disqualification.

The filing deadline ended in December.

Penfield is a businessman in the Irmo community. He is the founder of Tribal Coffee Co., Poore House Furnishings, Parking Lot King, and Maverick’s Cigars. He serves as a board member on the Carmel Commons Homeowners Association.

Frazier, a financial advisor, has been a resident of Irmo for the last seven years, and serves as chair of the town’s Events Committee.

Asked by the Irmo News if he is endorsing a candidate, Mayor Danielson said he will not endorse any candidate.
