Rep. Nathan Ballentine Discusses Tax Relief, Redistricting and Transportation with Rotary

IRMO, S.C. — State Rep. Nathan Ballentine, representing South Carolina House District 71, gave members of the Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo an inside look at state government, tax relief, redistricting, and the growing transportation challenges facing the Midlands.

Ballentine, a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, discussed several changes affecting South Carolina taxpayers.

Tax Relief for South Carolinians

Ballentine noted that South Carolina’s individual income tax rate has been reduced from 6% to 5.2%, providing approximately $325 million in tax relief.

He also highlighted an increase in the senior homestead exemption from $50,000 to $70,000. The increase is funded with recurring dollars, providing what Ballentine described as a more sustainable benefit for senior homeowners.

Redistricting Raises Concerns

Ballentine also discussed the recently approved redistricting plan. He said he was one of only four Republican House members to vote against the plan.

He expressed concern about outside political pressure and the potential impact of redistricting on South Carolina’s traditional legislative process.

Growing Pains on South Carolina Roads

Transportation and infrastructure generated considerable discussion. Ballentine said the South Carolina Department of Transportation has substantial funding available, but projects continue to face delays because of shortages of workers and qualified contractors—problems he attributed in part to years of inadequate transportation funding.

He addressed several projects familiar to Midlands residents, including the Carolina Crossroads project. While acknowledging that the project has created considerable short-term frustration for motorists, Ballentine said it is expected to provide significant long-term transportation improvements.
