The Town of Irmo Police Department was recognized by the state legislature on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 for being named an "Outstanding Traffic Safe Community" for 2012 by AAA Carolinas.
The award is granted by AAA Carolinas Foundation for Traffic Safety for crash statistics, number of law enforcement officers per capita, and presence of a formal traffic safety program and/or existence of a special traffic division. Irmo has often received this award for communities with a population between 10,000 to 30,000 and was recognized during the 9th annual Traffic Safe Communities awards luncheon on January 31.
The AAA Carolinas Foundation for Traffic Safety provides awards in an effort to recognize those cities that make a strong effort to make our state’s roads safer.

Marine Corps Pvt. Andrew B. McKinnon, a 2007 graduate of Irmo High School, Columbia, earned the title of United States Marine after graduating from recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island.
For 13 weeks, McKinnon stayed committed during some of the world's most demanding entry-level military training in order to be transformed from civilian to Marine instilled with pride, discipline and the core values of honor, courage and commitment.
Training subjects included close-order drill, marksmanship with an M-16A4 rifle, physical fitness, martial arts, swimming, military history, customs and courtesies.
One week prior to graduation, McKinnon endured The Crucible, a 54-hour final test of recruits' minds and bodies.
Upon completion, recruits are presented the Marine Corps emblem and called Marines for the first time.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Dominique N. Samuel, son of Kimberly Samuel of Columbia, S. C. and Clevland Smith, of Columbia, and other Sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN74) recently arrived in Singapore for a schedule port visit.
This is the first port visit since entering the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR) after five months of operating in and around the Arabian Gulf. The Stennis Strike Group consist of USS Stennis, Carrier Air Wing 9, Destroyer Squadron 21 and USS Mobile Bay (CG53), is deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet AOR conducting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts to support regional security and stability of the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
Samuel is a 2005 graduate of Columbia High School of Columbia, and joined the Navy in January 2009.
